Challenging myself to take out my camera daily and capture images based on preassigned themes. Follow my year here.
Wow! I've been pretty bad at sharing the images I've been creating for this challenge! I've continued with my commitment, though as my calendar has filled up, I'm not necessarily shoot every day (though I am most days), or on the topic when I do. I'll be periodically updating with pictures, though do follow along on Instagram for more frequent updates in my stories. Here are just a few of my recent images- even more coming soon! SoulmateWe lost not one but two of our cats this spring and summer. We think our second cat passed away from losing her sister, her soulmate, from her broken heart. This is my husband, my soulmate, burying her. Dark and moody, I know. But I do appreciate a good dramatic, emotional shot. Below, my soulmate modeling the tattoo her got to commemorate our 10 year wedding anniversary. Good Old DaysInspired by an image of my husband and his family taken in the 90s, I attempted to recreate coloring while also including one of my favorite bands from what I consider the Good Old Days... Nirvana.

I missed my first day yesterday, at least for posting. The theme was 'Swiss', and the picture I took of the moon just didn't turn out how I wanted. But I'm back at it today with minor flaw. She's a 10, but she runs into glass doors trying to go outsideShe also has a big ole' scar, likely from abuse suffered in her first life before being rescued. Thankfully today she is happy, healthy, and that minor flaw doesn't do anything to detract from her amazing personality. Unfortunately it also doesn't hide the fact that she regularly runs head first into glass paned doors.
As a mom, a wife, and a female entrepreneur, I feel like my successes and contributions are frequently glossed over. I feel invisible. The harder I work, the more I feel my contributions are devalued, or worse..... simply not seen at all.
Today's theme was 'Best [insert 4 letter word]', and after mulling over the topic, I picked 'Best Hugs'. My daughter is always attached to me, because she isn't a year yet and is still nursing. My first born, my son, my rainbow baby... he is the best brother ever, and so understanding.... but it can be hard on him. His hugs are the best ever, and now they mean more than ever before. He is such a special little human, and I'm so lucky to be his mom.
I couldn't decide on my subject today, so I basically had my camera on hand all day to try out a few different things, when and where inspiration hit me. Today's photos include my statement on mom life; the fact that it feels like that warm cup of coffee, getting enough sleep or feeling alert enough, and having a clean house are just out of reach. My coffee sat on the coffee maker until it was cold. Heated it up. Drank a few sips. Got cold. Tried to make more... sat on the coffee maker until it was too late for me to caffeinate without sacrificing sleep tonight. My husband got COVID this past week, and has been living in our in law suite downstairs. He told me this week has felt like myself and my kids are just out of reach; he can hear us upstairs. My son feels the same way. Cleaning up is hard when there is a cupcake left on the cake stand. Don't worry, he got to eat it after I took the photo!
This is my cat, Sage. Her sister, a dog adopted a few months earlier than we got her, is named Basil. When we adopted Sage, we leaned heavily towards naming her Oregano. My husband is a chef, so we named a lot of our animals after herbs/spices. We also had Dill the Fish (a carnival goldfish rescued from a leaking bag on a NYC street corner), and later, Dill the Astoria Beagle (a rescue found wandering around Astoria Queens, who we fostered, and by doing so, launched my family into the local animal rescue community and inspired others to join as well). Also, some documentary style images of my kids making a mess eating marinara sauce seasoned with oregano, in my mess of a kitchen. Not a polished Influencer style image of my home, which is what I'd prefer to share. Real, messy life. I was inspired by a few other parents doing this project who have been very open and authentic in sharing their homes just as they are. Life happens, kids are messy, and as another photographer reminded my 365 challenge group recently, quality time is so important.
January was a warm up in the photography group this project started in; easier topics, and occasionally sharing images from my portfolio for topics. I've noted whether the picture was specifically taken for the project, or if the image was from my portfolio. Here is a snapshot of some of the topics and photos from the first month of this project: CollectionThese pictures were taken specifically for this theme. CozyThese pictures were taken specifically for this theme. DreamsThese pictures were taken in Windham, NY, in October 2022. Leading Lines | 1/9This image was captured in Windham, NY, in October 2022. The StoryAs a photographer, I am a member of a lot of professional groups. In an effort by one of the group leaders to encourage professional development, I was challenged to capture fresh images each day of the year. 365 days. 365 images. The goal? Grow as a photographer, challenge myself to think creatively, and develop new technical skills in the process. Follow along with me on this journey through 2023. I look forward to sharing where it leads!
